The Association is affiliated with World Aquatics (AQUA) which is the international federation recognised by the International Olympic Committee for administering international competition in aquatic sports. Several ASAJ officials are AQUA certified.

Regional affiliations include Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Federation (CCCAN) and PanAm Aquatics (PAQ).

The objects of the ASAJ are:

• To promote the art of swimming including diving, water polo, and synchronized swimming and to encourage the teaching and popularity thereof.
• To stimulate public interest in favour of providing proper accommodation and facilities for acquiring and practicing the art of swimming.
• To promote, control and regulate competitions and championships, local and international for all amateur swimming and to establish uniform rules for the same.
• To encourage the art of life saving.
• To be or to take steps to be affiliated to, or associated with, organizations or bodies having similar objectives as those of the Association.
