MOU signed between ASAJ and Heart Trust/NTA/NYS & Media Launch of CARIFTA 2018

The official signing of an MOU between ASAJ and Heart Trust/NTA/NYS and the media Launch of CARIFTA 2018

The ASAJ and the Heart Trust/NTA/NYS signed an MOU at the Mona Visitors Lodge today, Wednesday January 24, 2018. Under this MOU, the Heart Trust/NTA will provide the ASAJ with 350 volunteers to assist not only with the upcoming 2018 CARIFTA but also with all swim meets being hosted by the ASAJ. Specifically for CARIFTA, these volunteers will function as Team Liaisons, Ushers, Deck Officials, Runners, Basket Carriers, Clerical Staff and Hospitality Operatives.

The event also served as the media launch for the 2018 CARIFTA Meet. In his presentation the Chairperson of the CARIFTA 2018 Organising Committee, Dr. Brian James, after indicating the importance of the alliance with the Heart Trust/NTA/NYS gave a brief summary of what had been achieved so far in preparation for the meet. Thanks to the Sports Development Foundation and the ASAJ, equipment had been acquired to upgrade the facilities at the National Aquatics Centre. These include a new set of high performance, state of the art, world class starting blocks and a brand new timing system. The 50 m pool was modified to have timing transducers at both ends of the pool. The disciplines of Water Polo and Artistic Swimming were also provided with the cutting edge equipment they need to properly host their part of the Meet. Independence Park Limited was assisting with the renovation of the bathrooms, the medical area and the various administrative zones in the complex.  In closing, Dr. James appealed for more sponsors to come forward as there were several other objectives that the Organizing Committee wanted to achieve but were being restricted by lack of funds.

Other persons making remarks were Mr. Edward Gabbidon, the Chairman of the Heart Trust/NTA/NYS; Mr. Martin Lyn President of the ASAJ; Mrs. Florette Blackwood who brought greetings on behalf of Minister Olivia Grange, Minister of Culture, Gender Entertainment and Sports who was unable to make it; and Minister Ruel Reid, Minister of Education, Youth and Information.
